Dear Team,
I am moving everything over to my Google Classroom. We used it in Q1 and Q2, so most of you have already joined. The codes are listed below just in case you need them. Please join the correct period. Parents can join too! I have joined my daughters' classes and it's cool to see their assignments. Your instructions for today: Go to my Google Classroom for your period and answer the most recent question/post. Email me for Google Classroom Codes for Barlow Science: [email protected] Thank you to all 30 of you who responded to the Online Learning Preferences for Science Survey. That's not a lot to go on considering that I teach 129 students and Mrs. M teaches at least 60 more, but that's the information I have, so I'm going to roll with it.
ASSIGNMENT #6 - Read and Reflect. Read the results of the survey below and respond to the Google Form by telling me what you think about the results. Be thoughtful and appropriate. Use details and evidence. Use at least 3 sentences. Here is a summary of your results from the survey. I will tailor my online assignments to your responses as best that I can. 1. Most of you have some sort of schedule where you wake up at a decent hour (9:00 or 10:00 am) and check teacher websites, Google Classroom, Canvas, etc. Several of you also said that you check again later in the day. A few of you said that you have a parent, usually Mom, who prompts you or helped you make and keep a schedule for school work. (I am doing the same with my own kids at home!) 2. Most of you complete your online work from a laptop. About 1/3 of you are completing your work from a desktop or phone. 3. 80% - a huge majority of you - said that you prefer to locate your assignments on Google Classroom and only 20% of you said teacher website or either. I hear you and will move all of our work to Google Classroom starting today! 4. For the assignment format you liked the BEST, 40% of you said you would rather read an article and answer some questions. 27% said you would like to work on an online project where you make something. And 17% of you said you would rather watch an informational video and answer the questions. 5. For the assignment format you liked SECOND BEST, 37% of you said you liked to watch a video and answer the questions. Then you were split about evenly between the other choices. You like writing a summary the least, though. 6. You liked Brain Pop, PhET, Discovery Ed, and CK12 the most for resources (in that order). 7. Here are the resources you listed! Amoeba Sisters, AAAS, Episodes like Mrs. Macsuga uses, Bill Nye, California Academy of Sciences, Amoeba Sisters, CA State University - Northridge, Ted Talks/TedEd, NOVA, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Study Jams, iTunes U, Khan Academy, YouTube, Education.com, Kidsites.com/science, and PBS Learning. The bolded resources are ones that were mentioned more than once. Bill Nye and Khan Academy had several mentions each. 8. For wanting a live Google Meetup, you were split evenly for Yes and Doesn't Matter. I'm not planning one at this moment, but that is subject to change after my virtual staff meeting today. Yeesh! Y'all sure weren't shy about telling me how much you didn't like the video of the lab, although you did pretty well on identifying the energy transformations. That was definitely a challenging lab experiment. It was actually meant for high school chemistry! That was also Flinn's first time conducting a live lab online. They learned a lot from that experience.
Sooooo, here's what I want you to do today. It is pretty quick. Take this survey* to tell me which ways you prefer to learn science online. It will take you 5 minutes or less and I will count it as today's assignment. *You must be logged in to Wake ID Portal/Google Drive in order to complete these assignments from now on. Hey Team,
Check out this chemistry experiment (Flinn At Home Lab 1 - Chemical Reactions)! It shows how energy flows in a chemical reaction and how to measure it. It will be live at 2 pm today. You can also watch the video anytime on your own. They will post the link this afternoon. This is a review of a 6th grade science concept of chemical and physical change, a 7th grade concept of energy transformations, and a preview of what is to come in 8th grade and high school. Chemistry experiment (Flinn At Home Lab 1 - Chemical Reactions) Then, fill out this Google Form. - You must be logged into Google Drive through Wake ID Portal in order to access this form. These two videos are on Discovery Ed. If the link doesn't take you straight there, you can access them by clicking on the app in your Wake ID Portal.
Watch both videos and answer the questions on the Google Form. You must be logged into Google Drive/Wake ID Portal to access the form. Discovery Ed Video #1 Bicycle Meal Discovery Ed Video #2 Reference Points Motion and Reference Points Google Form Questions You must be logged into Wake ID Portal/Google Drive with your student account to access these videos and the form. Parents,
Please fill out this very short survey about your child's access to online learning. (This is the same survey that is linked in our newsletter and on our team website.) Thank you! Online Learning Survey Watch the Brain Pop Video on Forces and answer the questions in the Google Form. You can access Brain Pop through your Wake ID.
Brain Pop on Forces Google Form Questions on Forces Use the link to our CK12 resources on Forces to answer the questions in this Google Form on Forces.
Here is an interactive website where you can further explore forces on your own. It is the PhET website that we used earlier in the year. Here is another website where you can explore centrifugal force and gravity from Wonderopolis. (Disclaimer: This assignment is for review. It is optional and will not be graded.) I miss you all so much! While I am enjoying time at home with my family, this is very stressful and I can’t help but wonder how everyone is doing and if you are safe and healthy.
My new normal for the time being is to work on homeschooling my 3 children, keep up with online work and assignments, and to keep a regular schedule going for our household. The schedule is keeping us sane and it includes lots of outside time for me and the kids. Every couple of days, I am going to post a couple of lessons for review and exploration of previous topics. If you have any questions at all, please email me! [email protected] I will respond daily. If you have not yet taken this teacher survey for Mrs. Barlow, please follow this link and take it. Most students will take it after their cells test. Thanks!
teacher survey Class this week: Students have a review sheet / study guide for their cells test. The cells test has been moved to Thursday, 3/12. We will finish with cells this week and start our study of protists - living microscopic organisms that are often found in pond water. We have to learn 4 specific protists: Euglena, Volvox, Amoeba, and Paramecium.
Look for ZEROS in PowerSchool and turn in missing work! Name some famous models of scientific things. 2.How do you qualify as evidence for the three parts of cell theory? 3.How did Louis Pasteur's experiment with boiling broth disprove spontaneous generation? Wednesday, 3/11 HW: Study for cells test. Use your study guide! WU: Page C35, #1-9. Thursday, 3/12 HW: Cells test today. WU: Page C35, #10 – 15. Friday, 3/13 HW: Review protists diagrams. WU: Page C28 Read the paragraph in the middle of the page about the paramecium. 1. How does a paramecium eat? 2. How does a paramecium move? 3. Is a paramecium more plant-like or animal-like? What evidence supports this? Class this week: We are getting lots of practice with learning cell parts and their functions. Ask your child about the simile they made up to compare a cell to. (Yes! Language Arts connection!) Look for a review sheet by the end of the week and test on Wednesday, 3/11. We need to finish cell parts up before we break out the microscopes.
PS I'm still working on progress reports! Hope to get them out this week. In the meantime, please have your child show you their grades in PowerSchool.
