Class this week: I am sorry for being so terrible at keeping up with my website these last two weeks! We finished up our cells unit by studying live organisms called protists with the microscopes. All of them except one were single celled organisms that are commonly found in pond water. On Wednesday, 2/25, we are taking a test on cells and protists. Next up: Cell division - mitosis and meiosis. We will use the microscopes one more time to see onion cells in different stages of mitosis.
Table of Contents: Cell Division Online textbook and Resources for Cell Division Unit HW = Homework WU = Warm Ups Monday, 2/25 HW: Study for test on Wednesday! WU: Describe how each protist obtains energy and moves (photosynthesis, eats, cilia, flagella, pseudopods, etc.). 1.Paramecium 2.Euglena 3.Amoeba 4.Volvox Tuesday, 2/26 HW: Study! WU: Chapter Review #1-9 Wednesday, 2/27 HW: Retake your test if you didn't reach the magic number. WU: Chapter Review #10-15 Thursday, 2/28 HW: Vocabulary Sheet: Cell Division due next week. Retake your test if you didn't reach the magic number. You have until Tue, 3/1. WU: Most missed questions on the test. 1.Where is the genetic information found in prokaryotes? 2.There are 3 “domains.” What are they and which ones are prokaryotes? 3.Write the levels of organization of living things in the order of smallest to largest: cells…. 4.What characteristics do Volvox and Euglena share? 5.What does the cell membrane do? 6.What does a lysosome do? 7.Which protist uses cilia? 8.What does it mean when we say that mitochondria are the powerhouse of a cell? Friday, 3/1 HW: Vocabulary Sheet: Cell Division due next week. Retake your test if you didn't reach the magic number. You have until Tue, 3/1. WU: Online pdf of Chapter C3 (different chapter number, same material) 1.Make a list of all the vocabulary terms from the new Vocabulary Sheet. Circle 3 terms that are the least familiar to you. What chapter does this sheet cover? 2.Flip through Chapter C3 and decide which diagrams might be the most iconic – most important – to this unit. Write the page number and a brief sketch. Attention Artists!
Would you like to receive recognition for your amazing art work and help spread a public health message to keep people safe? If so, then the Fight the Bite art contest is for you. Create a poster that helps educate the public about how diseases can be spread through mosquito and tick bites. Click this link for the contest details. Deadline is Friday, April 12th, 2019. https://epi.publichealth.nc.gov/cd/vector/FighttheBiteAnnouncement2019.pdf The contest is sponsored by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. https://epi.publichealth.nc.gov/cd/vector/contest.html Class this week: We are working on classifying cells as either prokaryotic or eukaryotic and also learning parts of a cell and differences between plant and animal cells. Microscope work will hopefully begin by the end of the week.
