For slide 15 (Local effects of climate change): Instead of conducting a survey, read a few of the articles below to determine which effects can be observed/measured in North Carolina.
The Greenhouse Effect PhET Simulation - LAPTOP ONLY
Greenhouse Effect - CK12 - Phone or laptop Greenhouse Effect - PLIX - Phone or laptop Class this week: We are continuing our Atmosphere studies. Students have learned about the gases and the temperature structured layers. They even made a scale model of the atmosphere so that we could see just how big the thermosphere really is and how tiny the troposphere really is. Next, we will learn about the function of some of the gases in the atmosphere like ozone and carbon dioxide. We will also investigate air quality and long term effects of not taking good care of the air we breathe!

Monday, 11/25 HW: Finish your layers of the atmosphere model. There has been lots of off task behavior and playing around while working on this, so I will not allow more class time for it. WU: List three things you are thankful for. Have a friend or family member write their response in the boxes and say why they could be thankful for those things. Tuesday, 11/26 - Warm ups for 11/18 and 11/25 due today. HW: Finish your layers of the atmosphere model. There has been lots of off task behavior and playing around while working on this, so I will not allow more class time for it. WU: 1.Write a reason why you are thankful for something in each box without saying the name of the thing you are thankful for. (Different things from yesterday.) 2.Switch papers with a neighbor. Have them write their guesses in your boxes. Happy Thanksgiving! - No Warm Ups for the rest of the week! For 6th & 7th grade Girls:
The NC Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh, NC is currently accepting applications for our 2020 Girls in Science: Future Focus program. This program will meet weekly from January-March and is open to current 6th and 7th grade girls. Each week for ten weeks, participants will come to the Museum to meet a different woman in science, hear her story and engage in fun hands-on activities and exciting behind-the-scenes experiences related to her field of work. Scholarships are available! Online applications include a student form, parent form and two recommendations. The deadline is fast approaching – applications are due November 22nd by 5 p.m. More information and application links can be found here: https://naturalsciences.org/learn/girls-in-science-future-focus Please help us spread the word to Triangle families, school faculty, homeschool groups and others who may be interested in this opportunity! If you are a woman in science or know someone who would be interested in joining us as a guest presenter for one of our meetings, please contact Erin Apple at [email protected]. Class this week: Our unit on the Atmosphere is in full effect. We have a vocabulary sheet and quiz this week on atmosphere words. Students are learning about the different layers of the atmosphere and how the atmosphere changes from ground to outer space. We will also explore weather measurements on a weather app or website and learn more about the Greenhouse Effect, air quality, and climate change. Overall, Quarterly Assessment grades were good. Students who earned below a 70 on the QA should use the new code they were given and re-take their test in Wolf Time by end of day on Friday, 11/22.

We have weather on our radar for the coming week, just in time to figure out the how and why of an arctic blast with plunging temperatures. It will be helpful (but not required) if your child has a weather app on their phone that includes atmospheric pressure and other weather details. In this unit, we will investigate the composition of the atmosphere and examine air quality causes and patterns before beginning our study of the factors that influence our daily weather patterns.

Class this week:
Week of 11/4: We will conclude our unit on Work and Energy with a brief foray into circuits and simple machines. I hope to work in some time for students to actually set up a circuit instead of just using a diagram. We will also use another PhET Simulation from the University of Colorado - such a useful site for physics topics. Next up: Weather! Table of Contents: Work and Energy - These papers should currently be organized in your binder! Resources and online textbook: Work and Energy HW = Homework WU = Warm Ups Lost your Warm Up Sheet?
