Ms. Dethmers is starting a Girls Who Code club. All 6th-8th grade girls are welcome!!! (No coding experience necessary. The first day of the Girls who Code club meeting will be 10/9, 3:45-4:30 pm in her classroom, room 2401.
Class this week: We took our vocabulary quiz and turned in vocabulary sheets for motion on Monday. For the rest of this week, we will finish up our motion concepts including a lab to calculate and graph speed using a Sphero 2.0 (little rolling robot).
HW = Homework WU = Warm Ups Monday, 9/24 HW: Check PowerSchool and turn in missing work. WU: Copy down any 3 definitions from your Motion Vocabulary Sheet. See ToC tab to download a new sheet if you lost yours. Tuesday, 9/25 HW: Check PowerSchool and turn in missing work. WU: 1.Sketch a distance-time graph and label the axes correctly. (Click and scroll down for an example here.) 2.What does a flat line show on a d-t graph? 3.What does a steep line show on a d-t graph? 4.What does a gentle sloped line show on a d-t graph? 5.What kind of motion does a jagged line show? 6.What kind of motion does a slanted straight line show? Wednesday, 9/26 HW: Check PowerSchool and turn in missing work. Finish any unfinished work on the Sphero Physics (formerly Hot Wheelin' Physics) lab paper. WU: 1.Show your work and calculate the speed of each segment the graph and then the average speed of the whole graph. 2.Which letter shows no movement? 3.Which letter shows the fastest speed? 4.Which letter shows the slowest speed? Thursday, 9/27 HW: Bring back signed progress reports. Finish "Speed Machines" problems. Test on Motion and Seed on Tuesday, 10/2. WU: SHOW WORK FOR EACH PROBLEM. 1.Calculate the speed of a car that travels a quarter of a mile (.25 mi) in 9.9 seconds. 2.Calculate the speed a hiker travels if they walked 10.2 miles in 8 hours and 45 min (8.75 h). 3.*Calculate the time it takes for a bus to travel 87.3 miles if its average speed is 45 mph. Friday, 9/28 HW: Study for test on Motion and Seed on Tuesday, 10/2. WU: 1.Write a real word problem for calculating speed. 2.Write the equation to solve it. 3.Have your neighbor (or family member or friend) try to solve it and show their work on your paper. 4.Let them know if they are correct and/or teach them how to do it correctly if they didn’t. 5.Don’t forget units with your (their) answer! Interested in joining our trophy and medal winning science team? Competitive and self-motivated to study more science?
Apply here: http://bit.ly/wmssoapp Application Due: Friday, 9/28 Notification of Acceptance: Friday, 10/5 First Team Meeting: Tuesday, 10/9 3:20 - 4:30 pm, Room 2523 (Barlow) Class this week: Vocab quiz postponed again! Be on the look out for an announcement about a new date later this week. Still working on Motion unit. Vocab sheet will be due on the new quiz date. I'm back! Thanks for all the well-wishes. I feel much better and my dad is getting better everyday.
HW = Homework WU = Warm Ups Monday, 9/17 HW: No school - hurricane day. Hope everyone is safe! WU: None today. Tuesday, 9/18 HW: Work on finishing the sheets from when the sub was here. Be sure they are in order according to the Table of Contents. Here is a link to section 1 of the textbook you used in class. Here is a link to section 2 of the textbook. WU: Read silently for 15 minutes. Wednesday, 9/19 - No School HW: Work on finishing the sheets from when the sub was here. Be sure they are in order according to the Table of Contents. WU: None today. Thursday, 9/20 HW: Finish Vocab Sheet. Quiz on Monday, 9/24. For real this time. WU: New WU sheet. 1.Describe how your position changes as you jump over an object. 2.Keisha runs 36 meters in 9 seconds. What is her speed? Use the speed equation and show your work. 3.Kyle walks 3 blocks south from his home to school. Aliyah walks 2 blocks north from her home to Kyle’s home. How far and in what direction is the school from Aliyah’s home? Draw it out! Friday, 9/21 HW: Finish Vocab Sheet. Quiz on Monday, 9/24. WU: 1. Scroll to page 325: What kind of graph is this? What is the zebra doing at points 2 to 3? 2. Draw vector arrows to represent the speed of two cars moving east on your paper where one car travels further than the other. 3. Explain the relationship between speed and velocity? Class this week: Working more on our Motion unit. Vocabulary quiz scheduled for this week has been postponed. Finish the Vocabulary Sheet and have it ready. No written warm ups this week since I had to be out sick and for hurricane days.
